What makes a good wood turning lathe?
When it comes to buying a wood turning lathe, you have two options: floor standing or benchtop. Floor standing lathes are often heavy and solidly built, providing maximum stability and minimum vibration. Benchtop wood turning lathes, on the other hand, are much smaller and must be bolted to a solid workbench for extra stability. These are useful for hobbyists and professionals alike. Though not something you can expect from all lathes, the best ones feature electronic speed control and run quietly and smoothly. For help choosing the perfect wood turning lathe for your application, give us a call on 01539 733 774.
How much does a wood turning lathe cost?
Charnwood, Draper, Scheppach and SIP manufacture some of the best wood turning lathes on the market – but these can vary in price. Other factors that impact the cost of lathes include the type of lathe required (e.g. floor standing or bench-mounted), size and functions. A larger, floor standing lathe is likely to cost you more than a smaller benchtop version. However, it will provide maximum stability for small and large-scale projects. Similarly, wood turning lathes with more advanced features and functions often come at a higher price but are extremely versatile – allowing you to complete more tasks. Here at Kendal Tools, we are proud to provide wood turning lathes to suit every budget – starting from just over £200.00. Why not browse our online collection and click through to find out more about the different lathes we stock? To narrow your options down, sort the results by price: low to high. This will reveal the cheaper products at the top of the page, and the more expensive models at the bottom.
Is a wood turning lathe easy to set up?
Yes! A wood turning lathe is simple to set up once you know how. Before you begin, make sure that the machine is switched off at the mains. This will reduce the risk of potential accidents and injuries. You then need to double-check the lathe is stable. If you’re using a floor standing model, it should have a sturdy floor stand, whereas a benchtop lathe is likely to have adjustable rubber feet that enable you to secure it in place. The next step is to organise the tools you’ll be using and place them on the tool rest in the order you’ll use them. In doing so, you won’t have to fumble around when operating the wood turning lathe – improving safety and productivity. It’s also worth checking that your tools are sharp enough for the task at hand. Blunt tools may cause your workpiece to chip or fly off, especially if it’s not secured properly!
Are wood turning lathes safe to use?
The simple answer is yes. However, you must have the appropriate safety equipment when using a wood turning lathe. For example, the lathe needs to be positioned in a well-lit area so you can keep an eye on your workpiece (and fingers) at all times. Before you switch the wood turning lathe on, double-check that all clamps and fittings are secure and the workpiece is free to turn. Safety goggles must be worn to protect your eyes from flying pieces of wood, and a face shield will stop you from inhaling sawdust and prevent breathing difficulties further down the line. On top of protective headwear, it’s also crucial that there are no loose bits of hair or clothing, as these could easily get caught in the lathe.
