A planer thicknesser is a woodworking machine, used to plane lengths of timber to a consistent thickness and width and is arguably the most important purchase for a woodworker after a table saw.
For more than 30 years, Kendal Tools & Machinery has supplied woodworking machinery and tools for everyone, from the professional woodworker to trade users and hobby enthusiasts. To add to our extensive range of machines, we also supply a variety of planer thicknessers – perfect for when you need a beautifully flawless finish.
As a leading supplier of brands, such as Scheppach, Sedgwick, Charnwood SIP and Fox, we stock only the best thicknessers on the market and are confident that we have the perfect solution for you – no matter what project you’re working on.
How does a planer thicknesser work?
Generally, there are four key components to every planer thicknesser, including:
- Main cutter block with usually 2 or 3 blades
- Feed-in feed-out surface tables
- Thicknesser table
- Rise & fall thicknessing bed
Planer thicknessers are used to rework stock so it is straight, flat, and square for a project – making sure it is the same thickness throughout its length.
It is essential that the bottom-most side of the stock should be flat – to allow for accurate flattening on the other sides of the timber, so if needs be you should plane or joint one side before you begin.
In most thickness planers, the cutter block or head is suspended above where the stock will enter and takes the form of a metal cylinder that usually holds two/three planer blades that rotate at high speeds to plane the wood.
Below the cutter block is a feed-in surface table (sometimes called a pressure or feed roller) that supports either side of the cutter head, gripping the stock and pulling it through the cutter head while flattening it to the table. These rollers support the timber on entry and departure – ensuring maximum safety and efficiency.
Once the chosen thickness gauge or rise and fall thicknessing bed is set up to your desired thickness (which outlines how much material will be removed) the process is mostly automatic – as the stock passes along the thicknesser bed, is supported by the rollers, and comes out the other side flat and ready for your project.
Planer thicknessers for small workshops
If space is at a premium, the functions of a surface planer (or jointer) and thicknesser can be combined into a planer/thicknesser – providing a more practical solution for smaller hobby or trade workshops.
A 2-in-1 planer thicknesser, like the Scheppach HMS1070 planer thicknesser, takes up a lot less room and works out more affordable than buying two separate machines. It’s designed to be portable and easy to move around your workshop – perfect if you’re short on space!
As with most of our thicknessers, this machine comes with two high-speed speed knives that operate at 8000 rpm. It has a powerful 1500W motor that makes it suitable for various cutting tasks.

What is the best planer thicknesser to buy?
Planer thicknessers are designed to trim boards to a consistent thickness throughout their length, smooth rough timber, and clean up sawn edges. Whilst they share the same purpose, the best unit for your workshop is dependent on numerous factors – most notably your needs and preferences. For example, you might be an avid DIYer looking for a small planer thicknesser that won’t break the bank. Or perhaps you’re a professional woodworker, with an abundance of space, willing to spend a little more on high-quality machinery. Luckily, here at Kendal Tools, we supply planner thicknessers from renowned manufacturing brands – such as Charnwood, Holzmann, Scheppach, Sedgwick, SIP and Zipper, to name just a few. These are available at various price points and include heavy-duty, portable, and bench-top models. For help choosing the right planer thicknesser for your space (and budget), get in touch with Kendal Tools by calling 01539 733 774.
Is a planer thicknesser worth it?
Though we might be slightly biased, here at Kendal Tools, we believe a planer thicknesser is worth every single penny – whether you’re a DIY woodworker or a professional. Planer thicknessers allow the planing and smoothing of large sections of wood to the exact size required. Without one of these machines, you won’t be able to trim boards down to the right thickness, meaning you’re likely to be limited on what projects you can take on. Once you invest in one for your workshop, it’s yours to use as and when you need it – no matter how big or small the task. Plus, even if space is at a premium in your workshop, there are plenty of portable units on the market – not to mention benchtop planer thicknessers – that can be positioned virtually anywhere. With prices starting from around £300.00 (including VAT), we’re confident that you’ll find woodworking machinery that suits your budget at Kendal Tools. We can even advise you on the most suitable planer thicknesser for your needs and offer a tailored quote.
When can I expect my planer thicknesser to be delivered?
Although we work hard to deliver woodworking machinery as quickly and efficiently as possible, the length of time it takes for your planer thicknesser to arrive at your door can vary depending on our availability and the time of your purchase. For example, if the product you’re looking for is currently out of stock, we will need to source the exact unit first. Fortunately, all of the machines and accessories we stock are sourced from UK-based brands. If you purchase a planer thicknesser late at night, our staff will only process your order the following day. Therefore, to avoid disappointment, we recommend that you always place your order in plenty of time.
What is a planer thicknesser used for?
A thickness planer is a woodworking machine used to trim and smooth large sections of timber to the required size. Although DIY and professional woodworkers can use planer thicknessers, like the ones above, for a variety of construction projects, they are typically relied on to ensure different lengths of wood are kept flat on both sides. To find out more about planer thicknessers and their uses, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the team at Kendal Tools. We are woodworking machinery specialists and will gladly share our expertise. Simply give us a call on 01539 733 774 or email info@kendaltools.co.uk, and we’ll get back to you.
Is a planer thicknesser easy to set up?
Yes, a planer thicknesser is relatively straightforward to set up once you know how. Before you plug the machine into the mains, you need to make sure that the fence is set to 90 degrees and parallel to the table. Using a precision square, check the distance between the fence on the infeed and outfeed table is equal. After that, it’s worth giving the tables and fence a quick wipe-down using a lint-free cloth and applying a specially formulated wax. This will help to prevent rust and allow the piece of wood to slide across the surface with ease. For further tips and advice on setting up and using a thickness planer, talk to the team at Kendal Tools. We’d be more than happy to share our knowledge and experience.
