What is a Mortiser Hollow Square Chisel?

Sometimes called a hollow chisel mortiser (HCMs), this tool combines the cutting of a four sided chisel with the action of a drill bit, making it ideal for woodworkers who cut a lot of mortise and tenon joints.

Repeatedly making mortises can be a repetitive and boring task but this bit should make light work of the task and leave you with plenty of time to spare on more enjoyable tasks.

Available in a range of sizes, there is a mortice hollow square chisel for every project!

How does a mortice hollow square chisel work?

Machined mortices are frequently made using hand-held routers or oscillating slot-mortise machines that use mortice hollow square chisels.

HCMs fit on the end of the arm and as it raises and lowers, creating the mortices through multiple shallow plunges, according to the dimensions required.

This is a mechanical method of ‘drilling’ square holes and thanks to the increased weight of such machines, is much less labour-intensive than doing it by hand – especially if you have many to complete.

For bespoke recommendations, why not email us at info@kendaltools.co.uk – our knowledgeable team can help you find the right HCM for your project.

What size mortice hollow square chisel is right for me?

Hollow chisel morticers (HCMs) are most often supplied in imperial sizes starting at 1/4” (6.35mm) and going up in 1/8” (3.17mm) increments up to 1” (25.4mm).

And the right size for you will often depend on your project.

The smallest sizes tend to be utilised by the arts and crafts market, while furniture-making projects usually use four main chisel sizes: 6.35mm, 7.9mm, 9.52mm, and 12.7mm – with 9.5mm being the most common for chair manufacture.

The very largest sizes require huge leverage on the plunge arm, even with the mortice hollow chisels and bits, making them relatively uncommon.

What is a wobble saw for?

Wobble saws are used to cut grooves of differing widths by altering the angle of the blade using tapered collars.

It is incredibly important that you use legal wobble saw cutter blades – as the chance of injury vastly increases with the width of the cut (amount of wobble) and the saw diameter.

These legal blades must also be used at slower speeds to keep users safe from harm, so finish and production rates will be affected.

To order today, simply add your chosen wobble saw blade to your secure online basket and choose how you want to pay.
